Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) could introduce daily flights between Budapest and Mumbai International in October or November 2025, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó flagged during a visit to India. He noted that the low-cost carrier had obtained all the necessary permits to operate the service.
According to the minister, Wizz Air will deploy its "brand-new long-range aircraft" on the route, likely referring to the A321-200NY(XLR). Szijjártó said that negotiations on a potential Budapest-Delhi International route are also underway. The current bilateral air services agreement between India and Hungary, signed in 1966, covers only Mumbai.
ch-aviation asked the airline for comment but did not receive an answer by the time this article was published.
In June 2023, Wizz Air received approvals from the aviation authorities of Italy, Austria, and Hungary to launch flights to India, the Hungarian-language aviation news site AIRportal reported citing chief executive József Váradi. An undisclosed airline reportedly submitted an application to the Hungarian Ministry of Construction and Transport for a permit to operate the Budapest-Mumbai route in April 2024.
Traffic rights between Italy and India were awarded to Wizz Air Malta. The Austrian-Indian bilateral covers exclusively New Delhi on the Indian side.
The ch-aviation fleets module shows that Wizz Air has forty-seven A321XLRs across its four AOCs, including Wizz Air UK, Wizz Air Malta, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi. The first aircraft of the type, msn 11631, was recently seen at Hamburg Finkenwerder performing rejected takeoff tests. Once delivered to Wizz Air UK, the aircraft will be registered as G-XLRA, Airways Magazine reported.
