American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) is suspending three routes this upcoming northern summer due to B787 delivery delays.
As first reported by The Points Guy, American will pause flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and Frankfurt International during June; New York JFK and Madrid Barajas during July; and Miami International and Paris CDG between May and July, inclusive.
"As a result of ongoing B787 delivery delays, American is adjusting service on certain routes in summer 2025 to ensure we are able to reaccommodate customers on affected flights," a spokesperson told ch-aviation, adding that the carrier remained "committed to mitigating the impact of these Boeing delays while continuing to offer a comprehensive global network."
According to ch-aviation schedules data, American flies daily between Dallas/Fort Worth and Frankfurt and flights will cease on June 2. Flights between JFK and Madrid also operate daily. They are scheduled to temporarily end on June 25, while the daily Miami-Paris flights will go into hiatus on May 4.
American Airlines will also reduce frequencies from Philadelphia International to Rome Fiumicino and Dallas Fort Worth to Honolulu from June through August.
In late 2024, ch-aviation reported that American Airlines was delaying the start of its Chicago O'Hare-Paris route in April and May and trimming frequencies on the Miami-Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini from 3x daily to 2x daily due to the B787 delivery delays.
American Airlines operates a fleet of fifty-nine B787s - thirty-seven B787-8s and twenty-two B787-9 - and has another thirty -9s on order. A decision by the carrier to accelerate the retirement of older aircraft during the pandemic and rolling delivery delays at Boeing have left American with long-haul capacity constraints ever since, particularly during the busier northern summer season. The airline did not receive any B787s in 2024. It is expecting ten in 2025 but will update that number, if required, in February.
During a quarterly earnings call last week, CEO Robert Isom said he "really like(d) where we're at in terms of our fleet... We love the B787 model. The -8s and then the -9s are going to be the real workhorses as we go forward."
Separately, American Airlines has confirmed that it has again deferred the introduction of its new Flagship Suite business class seats because of the B787 delivery delays.
