Cape Air (9K, Hyannis) is planning to venture into the Boston-New York commuter market using seaplanes airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dan Wolf has disclosed.
Through its partnership with Florida-based Resorts World Aviation (Miami Opa-Locka) and its two Cessna (single turboprop) 208B Grand Caravan Seaplanes, Cape Air plans to perfect its understanding of amphibious-aircraft operations before offering flights between New York Skyports Inc. Seaplane base, located at the foot of East 23rd Street between Waterside Plaza and Stuyvesant Cove Park, and a yet-to-be-determined seaplane dock on Boston’s waterfront. Cape Air is already in talks with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Coast Guard, as well as city and private property owners in Boston's Financial District to determine a suitable site for a dock.
“We’d like to start by doing four trips a day in each direction,” Wolf told Beta Boston in an interview adding that he hoped to commence operations by 2017.
The market's incumbent operator, Tailwind Air Service (PGN, Farmingdale), which already offers flights between Boston Logan International Airport and Manhattan’s seaplane dock using LIMA NY (Farmingdale) turboprops, is looking to expand its New York operations this summer with new flights from Bedford, MA.
