Spirit Airlines (NK, Fort Lauderdale International) plans to furlough about one-third or 1,800 of its roughly 5,200 cabin crew, as the company persists with its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in less than a year.

In a statement to ch-aviation, it said it was taking steps to align staffing “with our fleet size and expected flight volume. In line with this process, we have made the difficult decision to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants, effective December 1, 2025.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that a voluntary furlough will begin earlier, on November 1. The number of flight attendants that volunteer will determine how many are involuntarily cut, said the airline.

Earlier in the month, Spirit said it planned to reduce flight capacity by 25% in November compared to the schedule for the same period in 2024. That is on top of a previously announced capacity cut in which the company announced its exit from 11 markets as it focuses on its most profitable segments.

The ultra-low-cost carrier is expected to reduce the number of aircraft in its fleet, which currently tallies 214 Airbus narrowbody jets, but it has not yet made any actual fleet cuts. According to ch-aviation data, Spirit Airlines operates sixty-two A320-200s, ninety-one A320-200Ns, twenty-nine A321-200s, and thirty-two A321-200NXs.
