Maritime entrepreneur Pierre Balzan has announced the establishment of Melita Airways, a new air cargo carrier owned by Melita Marine Group, a maritime services company based in Malta.
"We are about to launch our Rolls-Royce/MTU spare parts delivery and services plus cargo operations in the Med with our own twin-engine aircraft," Balzan declared on social media. Asked for more information, he informed ch-aviation that the company would "communicate via press release in due course".
Melita Airways is currently recruiting a full-time pilot to operate a Beech (twin turboprop) King Air B200 to be based at Malta International. The operational spectrum will include air ambulance, charter, and air cargo services.
According to the latest available list from July 2025, Melita Airways does not yet hold an air operator’s certificate (AOC) from Transport Malta. A spokeswoman confirmed that the regulator had not yet received an application for an AOC from Melita Airways.
Balzan is the founder and managing director of Melita Marine Group, which specialises in superyacht maintenance, repair, refit, and marine engineering. He also leads group subsidiary Melita Power Diesel Ltd, the official distributor of MTU engines in Greece, Malta, and Cyprus. MTU and Rolls-Royce are intertwined through joint development programmes, shared technology ventures, and the use of the MTU brand under Rolls-Royce Power Systems for non-aerospace engines.
As of September 1, there is no evidence of Melita Airways having been already incorporated in Malta, ch-aviation review of the country's business register shows.
