Vietnamese start-up Sun Phu Quoc Airlines has received a Ministry of Construction-issued business licence for air transport operation and maintains that it will start operations in the last quarter of 2025 using A320 Family aircraft, according to a June 13 Facebook post by the airline's promoters, Sun Group, a real estate and hospitality company.
"The airline will operate narrowbody aircraft such as the Airbus A320/A321, including the A321neo," the post reads.
Longer term, Sun Group told local news outlets that it was in discussions with Boeing about purchasing aircraft, although it did not say how many or how far advanced talks were. However, when first announcing Sun Phu Quoc Airlines, the company said it was eyeing 31 aircraft by 2030.
"With Phu Quoc as its central hub, Sun Phu Quoc Airways will connect the island to major cities like Hanoi Noi Bai International, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang as well as key international destinations in South Korea, Japan, China, and expand into untapped markets including Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia," the post adds.
Separately, Sun Group has made an equity contribution of VND1 trillion dong (USD38.3 million) to get the carrier off the ground. It says the total investment in the airline will be VND2.5 trillion (USD95.8 million), although it has not said if it will stump up the entire amount or rope in other investors.
