AeroItalia (XZ, Rome Fiumicino) intends to sell its dormant and bankrupt subsidiary Aeroitalia Regional by the end of 2025, CEO Gaetano Intrieri told ch-aviation. The regional carrier, formerly known as AirConnect, will be offered to potential buyers after it finishes its restructuring process, which is expected to last until the end of this year.
Intrieri said that four parties are currently interested in purchasing Aeroitalia Regional, but the final decision regarding the sale will be made after the restructuring ends.
Last year, Italian media reported that start-up Aerolinee Siciliane (Catania) acquired Aeroitalia Regional to accelerate its launch and bypass the need for certification. However, Intrieri denied that this took place. He said the start-up company never made a binding offer to take over the regional subsidiary.
According to the ch-aviation Commercial Aviation Aircraft Data module, Aeroitalia Regional previously operated two ATR72-600s that were subsequently transferred to the mainline carrier. It currently has no active aircraft in the fleet.
The Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority suspended the airline's AOC on November 7, 2024, although the exact reason for the decision was not disclosed. The certificate remains suspended but has not been revoked. The company entered bankruptcy reorganisation proceedings in January 2025 due to its inability to service mounting debts.
