Lufthansa Group has allocated its entire order of forty B737-8s placed in December 2023 to Eurowings (EW, Düsseldorf). The aircraft are scheduled to start delivering to the low-cost carrier in 2027.
The German holding said that all 40 aircraft will be in service with Eurowings by 2032. It will be the first time that Eurowings will be operating Boeing aircraft, and the first time since 2016 that any of the Lufthansa Group carriers will be operating B737 Family aircraft.
The narrowbodies will allow Eurowings to retire its remaining thirty-two A319-100s (including four operated by Eurowings Europe (Malta)) and some of the older A320-200s. The airline also operates fifty A320s, split between the two AOCs, with the oldest being of 2002 build.
"With its capacity for 189 passengers, the Boeing B737-8 offers 39 additional seats compared to the A319. Its significantly longer range also makes it the perfect choice for longer medium-haul destinations, which Eurowings is increasingly offering in its portfolio," the group said in a press release.
Eurowings' fleet also comprises eight A320-200Ns, six A321-200s, and five A321-200NX across the two certificates.
