Caribbean Airlines (BW, Port of Spain) has dry leased a B737-800 from Macquarie AirFinance, resuming the type's operations after a break of more than two years.
M-ABPP (msn 35353) was ferried from Toulouse Francazal via Reykjavik Keflavik and Halifax to Port of Spain over the course of September 20-21. The 14.9-year-old aircraft, last operated by JAL - Japan Airlines, was ferried in an all-white livery and still registered in the Isle of Man. It will become 9Y-TTL on the Trinidadian register, according to the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian newspaper.
The aircraft has been reconfigured to seat up to 189 passengers in an all-economy layout. It is also the first aircraft Caribbean Airlines has leased from Macquarie.
Caribbean Airlines said that it leased the aircraft to "add capacity to operations" but did not elaborate on why it chose a previous-generation aircraft. The Trinidadian carrier currently operates nine B737-8s as well as ten ATR72-600s. It retired the last of its B737-800s from revenue service in July 2022.
The carrier plans to lease three more B737-8s but has been affected by production delays at Boeing, which likely influenced its decision to source an older-generation aircraft.
