Jorge Vega Rivera, general director of Grupo Aeroportuario, Ferroviario, de Servicios Auxiliares y Conexos, Olmeca-Maya-Mexica, S.A. de C.V. (GAFSACOMM), the parent entity of the new Mexicana (XN, México City Felipe Angeles),says the new order for ten Embraer E190-E2s and ten E195-E2s will allow the company to launch 11 new international routes.
The state-owned carrier is looking to launch flights to Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, New York, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson, and Miami International in the United States, without clarifying any specific airports, as well as Havana International, San José Juan Santamaría, Panamá City Tocumen International, and Bogotá in Central and South America.
Mexicana is looking to receive five E195-E2s starting in 2025’s second quarter. In 2026, it will add seven E190-E2s, and finally, it expects to take delivery of three E190-E2s and five E195-E2s in 2027, Vega Rivera said.
According to GAFSACOMM's general director, the E190-E2s will have a capacity for 108 passengers, while the E195s will have 132 seats. These new planes will allow Mexicana to carry over 3 million passengers yearly.
Finally, the carrier is looking to open two secondary bases in Tijuana and Tulum Felipe Carrillo International, and from these bases, reach destinations such as Vancouver International, Portland International, Montréal Trudeau, and Ottawa International from Tijuana, as well as Punta Cana, Caracas Simón Bolivar, and Lima International from Mexico’s newest airport, Tulum.
Mexicana currently operates a fleet of five aircraft, three B737-800s wet-leased from Fuerza Aérea Mexicana and two E145s from TAR Aerolíneas (used by subsidiary Mexicana Link), which allow the company to reach 18 domestic destinations across Mexico. Between December 26, 2023 (its launch date) and June 6, 2024, the company has carried 140,762 passengers on 2,990 flights, carrying 1,025 passengers on average per day, with its top destinations being Tulum, Tijuana, Merida M. Crescencio Rejon, Ixtepec, and Ciudad Victoria.
