FedEx Express (FX, Memphis International) is to build a new regional hub at Dubai South, the logistics district located close to Dubai World Central in the United Arab Emirates.
The new facility will feature the latest technologies to support FedEx Express’ regional and global networks and increase operational efficiencies to meet growing trade demands in the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, and Africa (MEISA) region, the company announced in a statement.
The new FedEx Express regional hub will also facilitate future air traffic growth through Dubai, enabling FedEx to expand its commercial footprint in the region, the company said.
Speaking at the November 2 signing of the requisite agreement between FedEx Express and Dubai South, FedEx Express regional president for the MEISA region, Jack Muhs, said the new hub would be developed with sustainable operations and energy use in mind. It would also feature an automated and advanced sorting system, hi-speed security screening equipment, cold-chain services, and capabilities to manage dangerous goods.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Middle East has seen a 15.4% increase in international cargo volumes in August 2021 compared to August 2019.
Other cargo carriers currently active at DWC include Cathay Pacific, Cargolux, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, China Airlines, Silk Way West Airlines, Astral Aviation, Cargolux Italia, and Silk Way Airlines.
